Book of the Month is very good at what it actually is: a machine for shipping this season’s buzziest hardcovers at scale. The question is whether that is what you want.
Every month, BOTM’s team picks five to seven new releases for millions of members, and you choose one for your credit ($17.99 to $19.99 a month, cheaper in bulk). It is choice theater: a real choice, from a list made for everyone. Ferrand Library works the other way around. You fill out a Taste Card once; a librarian reads it and chooses from everything, one reader at a time, and the box arrives with the bookmark, the month’s object, and an accession stamp that makes it a library book.

Where they win, honestly. Price, and it is not close: a BOTM hardcover costs less than half our entry tier. If a new-release hardcover at the lowest price is the goal, BOTM is the right machine, and you should use it with a calendar reminder set for the 4th of every month.
Where the library wins. You are not picking from a warehouse’s shortlist; someone is reading you. Backlist, classics, small-press, the book you did not know to ask for. No billing mechanics designed around forgetting. A box that is a ritual instead of a padded envelope. And a dollar of every book placed onward with a plate in it.
