Wells The Star Overview This is Wells writing the end of the world, and it might be the finest example in his whole short-story output of a technique he uses better than almost anyone: telling a catastrophe not through a single protagonist’s eyes but through the whole species at once, cutting between an astronomer’s calculation, a schoolboy’s homework, two lovers under Capricorn, and a weeping woman kneeling beside her dead, all of them watching the same impossible light climb the sky. There is no hero here, no survivor…
