H. G. Wells The Misery of Boots Overview The Misery of Boots is a socialist pamphlet, and it makes its whole argument from one small, undeniable fact: a great many people’s shoes hurt. Wells spent part of his childhood in an underground kitchen looking out at the street through a grating, seeing people “as boots simply, indeed, as the soles of boots” before he ever saw their faces, and he builds an entire economic argument on that childhood vantage point.
