H. G. Wells A Misunderstood Artist Overview This one is barely a story at all — it’s a sketch, a bit of overheard train-carriage comedy that Wells clearly wrote in one sitting and enjoyed writing. A poet and a “corpulent person” who turns out to be a cook fall into conversation on a train, each convinced the world persecutes him for his art, and the narrator’s Punch-reading commuter gets flattened between them like roadkill. It runs about four pages. There’s no plot to speak of — just two windbags agreeing…
