Ingersoll Lockwood 1900; or, The Last President (1896) Overview This is a campaign pamphlet wearing the costume of a novel — an eleven-thousand-word future history, written and published during the 1896 presidential race, that imagines what happens if William Jennings Bryan wins it. Lockwood dates the disaster precisely: “the night of Tuesday, November 3rd, 1896,” the actual election night, on which the actual result went the other way. From there the book runs forward four years to the destruction of the republic on the first midnight of the twentieth century.…
