Victor Hugo Bug-Jargal (1826) Overview Bug-Jargal is Hugo’s novel of the August 1791 slave uprising in Saint-Domingue, told as a campfire story by a French officer who cannot finish it. The outer frame is a Republican bivouac on the eve of battle: Captain Léopold d’Auverney, a man his comrades have privately concluded is trying to get himself killed, is coaxed into telling the history of his lame dog. The inner story is his own — twenty years old, nephew and heir of one of the richest planters in the Plains…
